🎣 Trout Fishing Opener 2024: Tips and Tactics for a Successful Opening Day

Successful trout fishing opener session
National trout season opener in category 1 rivers: a must-attend event for passionate anglers.

The most dedicated anglers already have this date circled on their calendar. Others may not yet realise how important it is. Of course, we are talking about the trout fishing opener on first-category rivers.

That is exactly why I want to share the best reasons to hit the water and my personal trout fishing tips to catch your first fish of the season. Before anything else, remember to secure your fishing licence and check local regulations before heading out.

📍 Early Season Strategy: Where and How to Fish

First of all, one of the best reasons to fish opening day is simply enjoying fresh air after the winter break. For early season trout fishing, I usually focus on small to medium rivers. These waters often receive less pressure than larger rivers and frequently offer better conditions.

I also like covering several rivers throughout the day to locate quieter sections. As soon as I identify a promising zone, I slow down and spend more time there. Since trout move less in cold water, persistence on productive spots often makes the difference.

⚙️ 3 Essential Delalande Lures for the Trout Season Opener

To approach multiple types of water effectively, I rely on three complementary trout soft lures.

Buster Shad trout lure
Buster Shad (5cm)
Sea Wolf colour
TouptiShad soft lure
TouptiShad (3–4cm)
Spy colour
Chabot trout lure

Light Gold colour

The Buster Shad and TouptiShad allow me to cover shallow runs, edges and current seams with a steady retrieve. The Chabot, on the other hand, is reserved for deeper holes and slower presentations close to the bottom. This helps target less active trout holding tight in cold water.

🎣 Gear Setup and Technical Approach

For gear, I fish with a 1.80m rod matched with a 2000-size reel. While some anglers prefer longer rods on wide rivers, I find this setup much easier to handle on overgrown banks and technical streams.

  • Braid or Mono: I carry two spare spools. Braid (6–8/100) is my preferred option for slower early season fishing, while mono works perfectly later in the year.
  • Stealth: Wear neutral clothing and polarised glasses. They help locate fish-holding areas while protecting your eyes.
  • Landing: Always bring a rubber mesh landing net to safely land fish while minimising stress and injury.

A Passion Open to Everyone

The trout season opener is above all a chance to reconnect with nature. That is why I strongly encourage catch and release whenever possible to protect future generations of fish. Now it is your turn—get to the water and enjoy opening day.
